Personally, I give this movie a 5 out of 5. I know it had mixed reviews from critics and it didn't do well at the box offices but I totally disagree. I'm not sure what everyone else was wanting. It has everything that a great fairytale asks for! It has the forbidden love of a poor farmhand named Jack, played by (Nicholas Hoult), who is smitten with the king's daughter, Isabelle, played by (Eleanor Tomlinson), but unfortunately for her she is already promised to Lord Roderick, played by (Stanley Tucci). The movie is centered around an ancient legend about King Erik and his victory against an army of invading giants. He imprisons them in their realm using his magical crown. Whomever has the crown has the power to control the giants. We find out early that Lord Roderick is not the honorable man that he is portraying to be and he has a evil scheme he is about to put into action. All of the sudden he is deceived by a monk who steals from him rare magic beans that hold a terrible fate in the wrong hands. While running for his life, the monk bumps into Jack who he offers the beans as collateral for his horse until they meet up at the Monastery, where he will then trade them for money. Jack accepts his offer and returns home to tell his Uncle the story of what happened at the market. His Uncle scolds him for being so foolish, throws the beans on the floor, and storms out of the house. At the castle, Isabelle has had a fight with her father where she has decided she doesn't want to be tied down anymore and runs away. It starts pouring down rain and she ends up seeking shelter, ironically, at Jack's house. While getting to know each other, a bean that has escaped through the floorboards gets wet and takes root. Unexpectedly, the house is lifted into the air by the giant bean stalk, taking Jack and Isabelle along for the ride. While trying to rescue her from inside the house, Jack is knocked off the stalk and lands on the ground knocking him unconscious. He wakes up to find the King, all his men, and Lord Roderick over him. Jack tells them his distressing news about the princess and offers his service to join them in rescuing her from the unknown. This sends them on a journey where they encounter giants and have to find a way to save themselves, their loved ones, and the world from the impending doom. I loved this movie and the clever twist they added at the end about where the magical crown secretly has a home. I love fairytales and this is one movie I will absolutely add to my collection.
